Lia Quartapelle

Lia QuartapelleLia Quartapelle is an Italian MP of the Democratic Party (PD) since March 2013, and Party Leader of the Commission of Foreign and European Affairs of the House of Representatives. She is a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council and of the Italian board of the European Council on Foreign Relations (EFCR). She is also President of the Italian Chapter of the Association of European Parliamentarians with Africa (AWEPA), as well as of the Italian section of the Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) and of the Italian section of the Women in International Security network (WIIS).

Her constituency is the City of Milan, where she won the primary elections in December 2012. After a Master at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) in London, and having completed her PhD in Economics at the University of Pavia (2012), Lia Quartapelle became a research fellow at ISPI Institute and is primarily concerned with economic issues relating to Africa. In 2007, she was an economist for the Italian Government in Mozambique. She is the author of two books: General Budget Support as Conditional Aid. The Case of Mozambique. A Game Theoretic Analysis of the Relationship between Donors and Recipients. Berlin: VDM Verlag Dr. Mulle. Calchi Novati, Giampaolo and Quartapelle, Lia (edited by). 2007. Terzo Mondo, addio. In 2015 Lia was nominated for the International Visitor Leadership Program which brings current and emerging leaders from across the world to the United States to learn first hand about American culture and businesses. She will reflect upon this experience during our June lunch.
