American Business Group Rome
Speaker for September 2019
Giuseppe Tomasetti
Giuseppe Tomasetti is a winemaker, and former lawyer, working in the Bassa area of Parma, just about an hour from Milan.
Born near Parma, Giuseppe's family moved to the United States for professional reasons when he was just 5 years old. He grew up there, where he was known as Joe Thomas, and completed his studies, receiving the JD (law) degree from George Washington University. He proceed to practice law in the US, working as Chief of Staff for House and Senate politicians in Washington DC and a state Governor, in addition to clients in the energy, telecommunications and transportation industries.
In the 1980s Giuseppe moved to Zurich where he continued his international law practice. Eventually he reconnected with his Italian roots by returning to Italy.
In 2003 Giuseppe moved to Santa Croce di Polesine, in the Bassa Parma area, to make wine (he continued his international law practice from Rome until recently). Giuseppe notes that the best wines are always found in lowland areas, next to rivers, in sandy soils, where there is the right mix of humidity and sun. He bought and loving restored a 16th century fortified villa, built next to the Po River by the prestigious Pallavicino family after the marine battle of Santa Croce in 1558 in order to guard its strategic position. He planted a vineyard and in 2006 the Tomasetti Family Winery produced its first 400 bottles.
Tastings of wine and local gastronomic fare (e.g. Parmigiano, Culatello), and tours are held by appointment. Demand is particularly high among "foodies" searching for authenticity. A Tomasetti Family Winery Brochure is available.
